When the sun is shining, you want to be spending time with your partner, not slogging away in the gym.

But it’s really easy to get fit together and actually enjoy it and the summer is very best time of year for this. These suggestions aren’t only for couples though – get your friends involved too!

Go and see and event.
While the deadlines for taking part in many summer events have passed, there’s nothing stopping you going along to watch one. When running, cycling or swimming, a good crowd is sometimes the extra push you need to keep going when you don’t think you can. So you’ll be helping out the participants, but I guarantee that you’ll also come away breathless with inspiration and be signing up to an event yourselves as soon as you get home! There’s nothing quite like seeing people competing at their peak physical fitness to get you inspired to get fit yourselves!

Set yourselves a challenge.
Working as a team gets the best results as you’ll always have someone cheering you on and motivating you, even when you don’t think you can be bothered. Decide on a challenge – it could be running a 10k by the end of the summer – set a deadline and draw up a training plan. The key is to help each other stick to it – if your partner or friend is flagging, don’t take it as an excuse to give up. Be their cheerleader and one day they’ll return the favour.

Make it fun.
Give yourselves a fun reason to start training. Maybe you can plan a cycling holiday for later this year or next. Or you could get yourselves some roller skates and have a laugh while you try to remember how to stay upright!

Take up a team hobby.
Tennis is the obvious choice and you can get friends involved by playing mixed doubles. But you can also try squash, badminton, frisbee, volleyball or basketball. All things that are much more fun when you have an opponent!
