Our Clinic Director, Husam Fakhry is an avid runner and a seasoned marathon runner. He loves the challenge of a marathon and enjoys the discipline of training, losing weight and keeping fit. It’s a great way to get exercise in while enjoying the great outdoors – particularly in summer! – and Husam enjoys planning marathons in different parts of London, the UK and in beauitful cities around Europe. He has already completed three London marathons; one in Reykjavik and one in Helsinki, with a personal best of 4 hours, 25 minutes, 12 seconds.

Unfortunately, despite his great love of running, until December 2013, Husam hadn’t run in almost a year, after sustaining an injury towards the end of February 2013, while training for the London Marathon.
While running on the Thames Path between Putney and Barnes, he slipped on an exposed tree root and went head over heels. He went straight to his GP and an X-ray found that nothing was broken. He used RICE on the swollen ankle and was able to walk, despite the acute strain.
He continued the RICE treatment and had osteopathy and physiotherapy here at the Forge. Unfortunately, when Husam attempted to run again in April 2013, his ankle swelled again and he found running painful. He continued his physio exercises, had massages as often as possible and rested.
Despite the recurring injury and the frustration he felt at its slow healing and his inability to run, Husam was determined to get back into the challenge that he loved. So he focused on resting to give the injury plenty of time to heal. He had regular treatment here at the Forge and, rather than give up, he focused on his goal – to get running again!
In December 2013 Husam felt confident enough to start running again. He started gently, with a combination of running and walking – he ran for 3 minutes and walked for 1, repeating 4 times. Even when he felt he was able to run more, he made sure not to overdo it, in case of aggravating the old injury.
Over the course of the next 5 weeks, Husam worked up to 20 minute runs. He is now running 40 minutes quite comfortably.
A few weeks ago, Husam entered his first 5k run – you can see how he did in the picture above. He has 10ks coming up. He’s aiming for half matahons in September and then a full marathon in Venice on 26th October this year. He is is able to line up at the start line in Venice – and we’re sure he will! – it will be his 6th marathon! We’re wishing him all the very best for his upcoming events and hoping he’ll also be fit for London 2015!
