FAQs PHYSIOTHERAPY
What does a Physiotherapist do?
Physiotherapists play an important role in health promotion and self-management for a variety of conditions. They will obtain a full understanding of your current pain, restriction, or injury through specific questions and orthopaedic tests. They may examine the area, look at your movement, test your strength and assess how you are functioning.
Treatment will focus on both short- term relief and long-term rehabilitation. Your physiotherapist will discuss a treatment plan with you, and this may include a combination of manual therapy, taping, acupuncture, exercise prescription and education. In some cases, they may recommend shockwave therapy for chronic issues and tendinopathy pain. A combination of these treatment approaches helps patients to manage their pain, improve their function, and prevent further injury.
Are Physios doctors?
Physiotherapists are Allied Healthcare Professionals who are chartered and regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Some Physiotherapists may choose to complete advance studies and obtain healthcare related Doctoral Degrees. This will bestow the title of Dr; however, they should not be confused with a ‘doctor’ who has completed a 5- year degree in medicine and is thus regulated by the General Medical Council. In this case (PhD) accompanies the title to distinguish from a medical degree.
Physiotherapists complete a degree where they learn in depth knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical conditions, and various treatment methods. This allows them to safely assess and treat a wide range of conditions and injuries. Our Physiotherapists also participate in ongoing training to ensure they are advancing their skills and keeping up with the latest medical developments.
Physiotherapists will know when to refer their patient for further investigation or treatment should this be required. These referrals may be to a GP, Sports Medicine Doctor, or Specialist Consultant.
What should I wear to a Physiotherapy appointment?
Depending on the area of concern, wearing loose comfortable clothing which allows exposure of the area (if needed) would be advisable for your assessment. Depending on the location of your injury your Physiotherapist may ask you to remove certain items of clothing to carry out your assessment and treatment.
Shorts are preferable for lower limb concerns and a vest for shoulder and neck issues, if you’d prefer to change into these clothes at the clinic this is also an option.
How long is a Physio appointment?
Physiotherapy appointments typically vary in length depending on the type of issue or treatment being received. Our Physiotherapy appointments at The Forge Clinic are up to 40 minutes.
Please note- if you are claiming with BUPA the appointment is up to 30 minutes.
Can a Physio help arthritis?
A Physiotherapist can help you to manage the symptoms of arthritis, not the underlying cause. The primary role of a musculoskeletal Physiotherapist is to assist people with joint related arthropathies, associated pain and movement limitations.
Your Physiotherapist will carry out an assessment and discuss how the arthritis may be affecting you. They may include manual therapy such as massage and mobilisation in your treatment plan and prescribe individualised exercises programmes to help keep your joints moving, strengthen your muscles and improve quality of life.
Can a Physio help sciatica?
Yes, a Physiotherapist can help with sciatica. Nerve related pain can be treated with interventions aimed at reducing pain, improving function, and aiding recovery.
Your Physiotherapist will carry out an assessment to rule out any medical concerns related to sciatic pain and to understand the cause of your pain.
They will discuss and agree a treatment plan with you, and this may include a combination of manual therapy, taping, acupuncture, and exercise prescription. In some cases, we may refer you to a consultant for further investigation or imaging such as an MRI.
Can a Physio help neck pain?
Yes, a Physiotherapist can help neck pain. Following an assessment to understand the cause of your neck pain, they will discuss a treatment plan which may include a combination of manual therapies such as massage and mobilisation, and acupuncture. Your Physiotherapist will provide advice and education to help you self-manage your symptoms. Individualised exercises programmes can help keep your neck moving and strengthen the surrounding muscles, helping to reduce your pain and prevent re-occurrence of the issue.
Can a physio help back pain?
Yes, a Physiotherapist can help with back pain. They will first carry out an assessment and clear any medical concerns related to your back pain and establish the cause of your back pain. They will discuss and agree a treatment plan with you, and this may include a combination of manual therapy, taping, and acupuncture. Individualised exercises can be prescribed to help improve the movement and function of joints and spine and strengthen your core and back muscles to aid recovery and prevent re-occurrence of the issue.
How to self-refer for Physio?
Whilst some insurance companies may require a referral from your GP to allow you to claim for your Physiotherapy appointment, we do not require this referral to start treatment. You can simply contact us (link to: https://theforgeclinic.com/contact-us/) or book online (link to: https://the-forge-clinic.uk1.cliniko.com/bookings#service).
If you are attending for a specific injury or post- operative Physiotherapy and have Xray/MRI/ CT reports, or letters from your consultant, we would suggest bringing these along to your first appointment so we can ensure there is a copy in your patient file.
How much does a Physio cost?
Our Physiotherapy fees can be found here. (link: https://theforgeclinic.com/prices/)
Should I see a private Physiotherapist?
Current NHS and GP waiting times mean it can take a while to see your GP for a Physiotherapy referral, and you may also be looking at an extended wait to be offered a Physiotherapy appointment.
With private Physiotherapy you are looking at much shorter wait times for an appointment as we don’t require a referral from your GP and typically can offer you an appointment within a few days.
Appointment availability and flexibility means we can typically offer you an appointment at a time that suits you and we will always ensure you are booked with the best suited Physiotherapist for your concern.
