Shiatsu
ABOUT SHIATSU
Shiatsu is a form Japanese therapeutic massage which involves pressure being applied to specific points, muscles and trigger points on the body using fingers and thumbs. The word “shiatsu” translates to “finger pressure” in Japanese. The aim of treatment is to relax tight muscles, balance the autonomic nervous system, enhance the flow of chi, and encourage the body to heal.
Shiatsu was developed in Japan after WWII, and it incorporates therapeutic principles from the East and West, and it has been regulated as a distinct health profession in Japan since 1964.
During a Shiatsu massage gentle pressure is applied to various points along the body’s energy channels, known as meridians. The goal is to balance the flow of energy, or qi, within the body. Shiatsu may also involve stretches, joint rotations, and other massage techniques to promote relaxation, alleviate muscle tension, and improve overall well-being.
The amount of pressure applied can vary depending on the patient’s needs and wishes, some areas of tightness may feel tender when they are worked on and released. Our Shiatsu therapist will check with you throughout treatment to ensure the amount of pressure used is just right.
Shiatsu is applied through clothing, as no oils are used, so we advise our patients to wear loose comfortable clothing for their Shiatsu appointment. Traditionally this treatment is carried out the floor, however in the West it is often carried out on a massage couch. Here at The Forge Clinic, we conduct all massage treatments on our massage couches, and we offer either a 45 or 60- minute appointment duration for Shiatsu.
