acupunctureThree in ten people are unaware of how traditional acupuncture can help them, according to a survey by the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC). While more than 21% are too scared to try acupuncture because they think the needles are as large as ones used for injections, when they’re actually as fine as human hair.

However acupuncture can help with many different conditions and has many celebrity supporters. Olympic swimming legend Rebecca Adlington relied on acupuncture throughout her career for pain relief and Celine Dion used acupuncture to improve her chances of getting pregnant.

TV presenter and Style Editor Donna Air first had acupuncture to cope with the stressful demands of live TV and now has regular sessions to help maintain good health. “I’ve always found it’s worked brilliantly,” she said in an interview supporting Acupuncture Awareness Week. “I start a treatment feeling slightly strung out,” she explains, but afterwards “I feel my body just completely rebalanced again.”

SO HOW DOES ACUPUNCTURE WORK?

Traditional acupuncture is based on ancient principles which go back over two thousand years. The treatment involves placing extremely fine, sterile needles painlessly at specific points on the body. This has the effect of stimulating endogenous opoids (the natural pain killers) and other neurotransmitters such as serotonin (the “happy hormone”) produced within the body. Many people report areduction in pain and a general well being boost with acupuncture.
