WHAT IS HYPNOTHERAPY
Hypnotherapy is, perhaps one of the most misunderstood methods of psychological treatment. The myths and misconceptions that surround hypnotherapy mostly stem from people’s ideas about stage hypnotism. In practice, Hypnosis is a genuine psychological therapy which has valid uses in a clinical setting.
It is a state of focused concentration which is particularly effective in facilitating desired changes in behaviour, feelings, thoughts and emotions. The desired changes can take root without being undermined by a critical and often self-defeating, conscious thought process. Hypnotherapy will facilitate a completely natural state of consciousness, such as that we experience throughout our everyday life. This is like when you are driving along a familiar route, deep in thought, and you arrive at your destination without quite remembering how you got there. This situation is caused by the conscious mind being deeply absorbed in thought while the subconscious mind is driving, utilising the many hours of driving practice stored in your mind as a guide.
HOW IT WORKS
There are two types of hypnosis: suggestive and analytical. After having been guided into a relaxed ‘trance like’ state which is similar to meditation, your mind is much more open and receptive to positive suggestions. This suggestibility can be used to very good effect when aiming to change unhelpful thought patterns or habits.
During analytical hypnosis, unconscious and buried experiences rise to the surface where they will be neutralised and expelled using therapeutic techniques. Addressing the underlying issues often results in a client experiencing immediate relief. As this approach targets and eliminates the root cause of an issue, the results tend to be more long term.
Both approaches have their place as part of effective therapy and Tanja will use either or both, depending on a your individual situation. She will also utilise elements of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, psycho sensory techniques or coaching where appropriate.
WHAT CAN IT HELP WITH?
Habits and Behaviours

– Teeth grinding
– Media addiction
– Procrastination
Psychological Issues
– Fears and Phobias (e.g. fear of flying, public speaking, needles etc.)
– Anxiety, stress and depression

These are just a few of the issues Hypnotherapy can help with, but we are happy to talk about your own particular problem prior to making a decision if hypnosis is right for you. Hypnotherapy does not involve a state of unconsciousness. You will be fully aware of your thoughts and actions and will not be in a state where you will do things against your will.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Tanja Nordmann offers the Hypnotherapy sessions at The Forge Clinic. Your initial session with her will begin with a consultation regarding why you are seeking Hypnotherapy treatment. Tanja will discuss the best approach with you and confirm you are happy to proceed.
If you are new to hypnosis, she will explain the process and give you the chance to get a feel for it through some short exercises. There will always be plenty of time for you to ask questions. Once you have settled in comfortably, you will be guided through your first individually tailored hypnosis session. There will be time for a short de-brief after the session where any questions that you may have at that point will be answered. Now that you are familiar with hypnosis, the following sessions will be exclusively focussed on the therapeutic work to achieve your goals.
HOW MANY SESSIONS DO I NEED?
The majority of problems will need four or five sessions for a lasting resolution. Some, more deep rooted problems, may take a little longer and sometimes other issues are uncovered during a session that you may wish to address.
Tanja will always aim to give patients the best chance to experience improvements in the shortest time possible.
