PRE & POST OPERATIVE REHABILITATION

ABOUT PRE AND POST OP REHAB

Surgery is often recommended in a treatment cycle for chronic conditions once other conservative measures such as physical therapy don’t bring the desired outcomes. Very often an orthopaedic consultant will make sure that the patient has completed a course of physiotherapy treatment and exercises prior to any other clinical interventions or surgery.

When surgery is combined with a well-planned pre and post-operative rehabilitation plan it can help restore normal function in the affected area of the body.

PRE OP

Before any surgery there is often a period of waiting involved. This can be used to prepare the body for the surgery and facilitate a better outcome after the operation. When muscles, bones and joints are in optimum condition before the procedure, the impact of muscle loss and joint stiffness is minimized post operatively. The stronger a person is going into surgery, the better the chances of an easier and faster recovery after surgery.

Physiotherapy before certain types of orthopaedic surgery can help to ensure a better recovery process after your operation.

You may be prescribed a pre-operative exercise programme to build and maintain movement, strength and to prepare you for your post-operative rehabilitation programme. Physiotherapy appointments before surgery will also give you the opportunity to discuss any concerns or questions you may have and your physiotherapist will make a plan for the steps you need to take after your surgery.

SURGERIES THAT MAY REQUIRE REHABILITATION
