THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES
It’s been two years since the excitement of the London 2012 Olympics and now the Commonwealth Games have come Glasgow. The Games kicked off with the opening ceremony on Wednesday and are now well under way, with Jodie Stimpson and Alistair Brownlee already taking gold for England and Hannah Miley claiming gold for Scotland.
This time, we won’t be cheering on the united Team GB, but Teams England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Here are our ones to watch…
Squash
As squash is not an Olympic sport, now is the time for our squash teams to really shine. World champion Laura Massaro will be partnering Jenny Duncalf in the women’s doubles and is eager for gold in the women’s singles. Nick Matthew, also the current world champion, is recovering from knee surgery but is keen to repeat their 2010 success which saw Matthew and teammates James Willstrop and Peter Barker take the top three medals.
Diving
Of course we’ll be keeping an eye out for Tom Daley, who’ll be looking to score a second Commonwealth gold this year, ahead of his 2016 Rio bid.
Table Tennis
If this event bypassed you at the Olympics, now’s the time to check it out. Played at a frenetic pace, table tennis can claim England’s most successful Commonwealth athlete. Andrew Baggaley is hoping to take yet another gold home this year.
Running
Unfortunately Mo Farah has had to pull out due to illness, but Usain Bolt is always great fun to watch, no matter what part of the world you’re supporting!
Cycling
Despite the retirement of cycle stars Sir Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton, the English team is still brimming with talent in the form of Laura Trott, Dani King, Lizzie Armitstead and Jo Rowsell. And don’t miss Sir Bradley Wiggins tackling the time trial at the end of the month.
Shooting
Amber Hill is only 16 and has already won a senior World Cup event and BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year. Among an 11 strong team, Amber is widely expected to get a podium place.
Weightlifting
Michaela Breeze has come out of retirement for Team Wales. She quit after her silver at the 2010 games and this year will be pitched against England’s Zoe Smith.
Boxing
Michael Conlon will be striding out for Team Northern Ireland and hoping to add to their previous success in Delhi in 2010.
There is, of course, lots more to keep an out for. We encourage you to be inspired by the athletes – you might find something new to try!
